Someone recently told me your home is 85% more likely to be damaged by water than fire. It makes sense since water intrusion can show up in many ways such as broken pipes, appliance failure (water heater, washing machine, refrigerator and dishwasher), leaking sink plumbing and toilets. Basically, the greatest danger to any dwelling is water.
Two days after I closed on our home I noticed a pool of water in the garage. Turns out the water heater had a leak. During that time I had so much on my plate (packing up the old apartment, renting a moving truck, notifying utility companies and schools, painting the new house, ripping out the old carpet, etc.) – a leak was the last thing I wanted to deal with. I had a plumber take a look and confirm that the leak was caused by extremely cold temperatures (I bought the house in January). It was -13 on moving day. Yikes!
He explained to me that cold temperatures can cause the metal to expand and contract, and if you have an older water heater kept in a cold or unheated location, leaks and cracks could be the result.
Luckily, the leak stopped and since we didn’t move in until the following week, nothing got wet.
Now, I make a point of checking under and around our water heater during winter months to make sure there’s no water seep. Our garage isn’t used for my car but for storing all the things we don’t have room for in the house. Some of the things we store in the garage include my children’s artwork and a few of their favorite toys and books from their early childhood.
Those items are priceless to me and I’d be devastated if they got wet. We also store extra mattresses, furniture, tools, and seasonal clothing.
Of course, had the leak gone unnoticed it could have eventually resulted in significant water damage to the walls, floors, and our belongings.
As a single mom and the breadwinner of the family, every penny matters to me. I am not even open to the possibility of dealing with water issues. And as a homeowner I have to track and monitor a million little things around the home. My to-do list never ends.

All you need is this blue box, the Honeywell Lyric™ App and your Wi-Fi password.
Step #1: Download the Honeywell Lyric™ App.
Step #2: Open the battery cover and install the batteries which have a life of about three years.
Step #3 and #4: Connect and configure the Lyric™ Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector on your app. Here’s where you can customize. You can set thresholds for the temperature and humidity sensors.
Step #5: Place the Lyric™ Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector flat on the floor or hang it on the wall with the included screw. You can also install the optional cable sensor which I did.
To install the cable sensor, remove the sensor jack plug.
Now insert the cable sensor. The included four-foot water sensing cable can be placed around objects and along floors, cracks, and other spaces, and can be extended with additional cable sensors for up to 500 feet of continuous coverage.
I placed the Lyric™ Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector between my water heater and the washing machine. You can conveniently place it anywhere leaks could happen.
The first thing I wondered when I opened the box was whether the Lyric™ Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector was reusable after it has sensed water. The answer is “yes”. It’s recommended to wipe the Lyric™ Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector clear of any debris, dry it, and replace the batteries before reuse.
