Getting your garage organized is possibly one of the most dreaded tasks you face as a homeowner. On one hand, you want an organized garage, but at the same time you don’t care, because it’s “only” a garage. Who cares if it’s messy?! Well, I did care enough to devote my entire Labor Day weekend to getting my giant mess of a garage organized. And I’m so glad I did.
Having a messy garage brings up several issues. Number one, I end up buying more stuff because I can’t find what I already have. When I was cleaning out the garage, I found three rolls of electric tape (who needs three rolls?), an extra box of screws, and two brand new paint brushes I didn’t know I had. Issue number two is that no one wants to go in there. A messy garage can be a scary place. Thirdly, I waste precious time looking for things like a screwdriver or rake.
Now, every single tool, tape, screw, etc. I own, is on that pegboard or shelf. 
I built this wall storage using really cheap 1 x 4’s. The shelves are perfect for storing smaller things like spray paint and boxes of screws and nails.
Do you see this? If your garage looks like this (or worse), trust me, there’s hope.
Cleaning out the garage was a perfect time for getting rid of a bunch of stuff. I made a pile for trash and one for donation.

Next, I built the frame. My inspiration for this wall storage came from Cindy’s blog :The Creativity Exchange. I was looking for very basic, “skinny” shelving. Her built seemed perfect for my garage.
I nailed the pegboard to the 1 x 2’s to keep the board from pushing inward. The 2ft. x 4 ft. pegboard is from Home Depot. It was brown but I painted it with leftover paint. I also painted the frame white, mainly because of the ugly black marks.
I am so happy with the pegboard. I had no idea pegboards could hold so many different things. A few months back, the friendly folks at National Hardware sent me an assortment of hooks and tool holders. National Hardware has an amazing selection of pegboard hooks, storage hooks, tool storage clips, etc. Curved hooks, double hooks, loop hooks, organizing trays, and jars… they have it all. They are known to make high-quality products that exceed regulatory standards. Their cabinet knobs are beautiful.
With the help of the large storage hooks, I was able to organize my yard tools.
These steel hooks are strong enough to hold ladders and various other equipment in the garage.
The large size easily accommodates products that are difficult to store.
It’s hard to get motivated when your garage looks like a dump. Fortunately, with a few simple storage ideas and some elbow grease, you can keep your garage looking clean and organized. Now that my tools are organized and my floor is clean and fresh, I’ve moved on to building a few easy and cheap 2 x 4 shelves for my larger bins.
