A few months ago, my friend, Jalei, showed me a picture of this floating shelf from Urban Outfitters. She wanted one for her new apartment, but after seeing the price, I decided to make a similar floating shelf for her instead. Let me show you how easy it was to make this shelf.
Urban Outfitters Inspired DIY Floating Shelf
Step #1: I started with an old pallet I had sitting around.
Steps #2 & #3: I cut four boards @17 inches and two smaller @11 inches. If you don’t have a saw, get a 1 x 3 at Home Depot and ask them to make the cuts for you.
Step #4: I used my orbital sander to make the boards smooth.
Step #5: Next, I applied wood glue to the boards.
Step #6: A few screws went into the two bottom pieces.
Step #7: I finished with four wood hook screws – one for each corner.
I tied a rope to the hooks and tied a knot at 2 feet. The shelf hangs from a sturdy hook in the ceiling.
To protect the wood from spills, I applied a Polyurethane in clear satin.
I can’t wait to give this shelf to Jalei!
