Homemade Shea Butter Lotion

For Christmas this year, I made lotions and lip balm. They made cute stocking stuffers. The recipe for my lip balm is here. I have been making my own lip balm for almost a year now and I love it. I used these container tubes for the lip balm.

When it came to making my own lotion, I kept things pretty simple: Shea butter, olive oil or coconut oil, essential oils. The result is a rich and buttery cream that keeps the  skin healthy and soft. I use this cream daily after washing my face, and love how it makes my skin feel.

This lotion is so easy to make.

Ingredients

4 ounces  unrefined shea butter

2 tbsp  olive oil or coconut oil

Drops of essential oils

Shea Butter

This recipe includes shea butter which is very emollient and soothing to dry skin.  It is the white fat from the shea nut which grows mostly in Africa.  Shea butter is highly moisturizing and rich in vitamins A and E.  I bought a pound of unrefined shea butter and was able to fill six full 4 oz jars.

Gently melt the shea butter over the stove using a double boiler. I just fill a small saucepan with a couple inches of water, then fit one of my bowls over the top to create a make-shift double boiler.

Olive Oil/ Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a great moisturizer for the body.  It soaks in quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy feel. Some people don’t like coconut oil so olive oil works just as fine in this recipe. I don’t have one particular brand of coconut oil that I use exclusively but I like this coconut oil.

Olive oil has been used on the body since ancient time. It’s such a simple ingredient yet it’s packed with anti-aging antioxidants and is great for skin, hair, and nails.

Stir the olive oil or coconut oil and essential oils into the melted butter, then place the mixture in the fridge to cool for 30 minutes, until it’s at least half-way solidified again.

Essential Oils

I added a few drops of lavender essential oil but there are many essential oils that would be great for the skin. You could also add beeswax. I saved mine for my lip balms.

Then all you have to do is use a hand mixer to beat the butter until the lotion has a creamy texture.

Transfer the lotion into a jar, and use as often as desired. It should last several months.
