color story

A good book can inspire ideas and your way of thinking about certain things. This was the case with Change Your Home, Change Your Life™ with Color by Moll Anderson, which I recently read.  In this vibrant and colorful book, the author talks about how color positively impacts not just our surroundings but our mood, behavior and emotions.

Moll says our feelings about color are deeply rooted and emotionally based on our personal lives, and the powerful effect of color is most evident in our home. We don’t just look at color with our eyes; we take in color with our emotions, experiences, and even childhood memories. Did you know we all have a color story? I was intrigued and started thinking about mine.

As mentioned in one of my previous posts, after my divorce I was drawn to white. I believe this color represented a new beginning, sincerity, goodness, and mental clarity. White helped me clear my emotional clutter. I love white furniture, white walls, white bedding. Over the years, I started adding pops of color to my home – yellow in the spring, red during Christmas.

After reading Change Your Home, Change Your Life™ with Color I asked myself a question. What color do I feel good in? My answer: Blue. The color blue and I go way back to the time when I first saw and swam in the Mediterranean Sea, at age seven.  It was the prettiest blue I had ever seen.

I love to wear blue clothes. Even just wearing a touch of blue feels great.

Blue and white is probably my favorite color combo. It’s such a classic combination, which continues in dishes, vases, tiles and even curtains. Since blue makes me feel good, I knew this is the color I would feel comfortable having in my home. To me color isn’t about trends; color is about what I think is beautiful. It’s about making it work for me.

DIY Artwork

Each color section in Anderson’s book is full of ideas, tips, and lessons. Moll even offers creative fixes for the budget-minded home decor enthusiast. For example, Moll suggests to find a painting that inspires you and, using acrylic paint and big strokes on inexpensive canvas, you can create a textured piece of artwork. I did the same thing on wood.

Accessories

A pop of color goes a long way, says Moll. I couldn’t agree more. I’m not ready to paint my walls blue, but, a little blue here and there is fun yet sophisticated. Colorful accents such as pillows, throws, vases, etc., are affordable and a great way to infuse color into your room with minimal risk. You really don’t have much to lose. The rich blue color of my new throw pillows evokes peace and tranquility and compliments the white furniture.

Fresh Flowers

Fresh flowers are another great way to add color. Anderson encourages readers to try a new color of flowers every week until they connect to the color that breathes new life into their homes. I think that is such a lovely idea.pops of blue

At the grocery store I spotted a bouquet of mostly orange flowers. Although I have never been a huge fan of the color orange, this flower arrangement seemed like a breath of fresh air. It goes beautifully with the blue pillows and accessories. The orange color brings energy and brightens the room.pops of blue

color story

Reading Moll’s book was such a fun way to explore my color story. Who even knew I had one? As I’m writing this post,  I’m taken back to my childhood.  I can clearly see the azure color of the Mediterranean Sea. I can almost hear the gentle current and feel the subtropical climate. It’s true, I do have a color story.
