My Hair Color Over The Years & Messy Beach Waves

I have not been to a hair salon in ages. For years my hair was long and straight, and honestly, I didn’t see the need to visit a hair salon every few weeks or months. I’d simply grab my scissors and trimmed my hair an inch or two.

As a toddler, I had platinum blond hair. By age four, my hair was more of a golden blond.The 80’s! Big hair and even bigger shoulder pads. What can I say? It’s all Madonna’s fault. During my teen years, my hair turned dark blond, and I was okay with that.In my 20’s, California sunshine gave me a tan and my hair a sun-kissed look. My hair back then was absolutely low maintenance.My daughter Christy at age 10. She had the most beautiful natural highlights/lowlights. My dream hair color.The kids got bigger, and with each year, I found more and more grey hairs. I started using at-home highlighting kits. As a single mom, I’m just not in a position to pay an arm and a leg to color my hair professionally. I’ve always liked adding highlights just to refresh, while maintaining a look that was still close to my childhood hair color.

A few months ago, I grabbed my scissors and chopped off nearly eight inches of my hair. I ended up with a lob (long bob). I love the lob. Probably the best haircut I’ve ever had.

After my haircut, I ended up what professionals call, a bronde. This color technique is a combination of brown and blonde tones, thus the term bronde. This was all good until the top of my hair got way too dark and the bottom hair remained blond.

Lately, I’ve had so much fun curling my hair. I find that the curls or waves bring out the highlights even more. In the beginning it took me forever and I felt awkward holding the curling iron. I am used to curling my hair now. It’s quick and easy to create messy beach waves. Let me show you how I do it.

First I divide my hair into three sections.

I grab a one inch section of hair from the bottom half of the hair, spray it with hairspray and brush through.

I wrap the hair around the barrel of a curling iron, pulling away from the face.I leave the ends out so the look is a little more relaxed. I hold the hair wrapped for a few seconds until it feels hot to the touch then let the curl fall. I work my way around the entire head. I curl as many or as few strands as I like. It’s a messy hairdo, remember? It shouldn’t look perfect.For the top part of my hair, I alternate directions of the curl, going toward and away from the face.I save the two face-framing pieces for last, making sure to curl away from the face. Once the curls are cool, I use my fingers to break up the curls.
