The days are still hot, but at night we don’t need the A/C anymore. The large oak tree in the back yard sways in the gusty wind; branches bow and leaves rustle. This might just be my favorite sound in the world. I catch a fleeting whiff of something I have not smelled for a year – Fall. To me, fall has the most identifiable smell. The scent is kind of smoky; kind of mysterious.
Back in Los Angeles fall didn’t exist. There was no nip to the air – in fact, some of the warmest and windiest days fall in these months. Angelinos try hard to make fall happen. They bring a jacket in case the temperature dips below 75. Or they desperately shop for a new fall wardrobe just to come home with more shorts and sun dresses. Yep, they try.
Our first fall in Nashville was everything we could have dreamed of. We wore boots and jackets, bought scarves and sweaters, drank pumpkin lattes, took a zillion pictures of the foliage, doubled the recipe for pumpkin bread, visited pumpkin patches, farms, corn mazes and apple orchards. All of these fall activities were new to the kids.
Some days we’d hop in the car and take a drive to places where we discovered miles of beautiful scenic backroads.
Apple picking became something my oldest daughter and I loved doing together. We ended up eating a pound of apples at the orchard. They were so good, we couldn’t stop. At home we usually made an apple strudel or pie.
This year is different. Both girls moved away for college and they won’t be coming home until Thanksgiving. This year I didn’t go apple picking . It’s just not the same without the girls. When I asked my son he politely informed me that middle school boys don’t pick apples. Preteens!!!
The other day I was in the mood for an apple dessert so I went to Kroger to grab a bag of apples and a few other ingredients. I saw several pretty Glade® candles. I love candles – they are a must during the colder months. The name of this scent really got my attention – Hit the Road™. It sums up how the kids and I felt about our first fall in Nashville.
We hit the road, smelled, felt, and tasted Fall. The Hit the Road™ scent is lovely. It reminds me of the crisp, cool fall air the kids and I fell in love with nearly three years ago. The color reminds me of the perfect blue fall sky that accompanied us on so many fun outings. I can’t wait for the girls to smell it.
I am a sucker for candles. I just love the ambience that candles create. Kroger carries the Glade® New Limited Edition Fall Scents so I also picked up this amazing pumpkin scented candle.
What would fall be without pumpkins? Our family is obsessed with anything pumpkin. Pumpkin Pit Stop™ smells like a pumpkin pie with cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg . It’s perfect for a cool fall evening. Isn’t the color gorgeous? This candle makes my house smell and look all autumn-y.
Although I didn’t go apple picking this year, I still enjoy making apple desserts. Like this quick and delicious apple strudel. For this recipe I used refrigerated crescent rolls dough. It only took a few minutes to make. As much as I love apple strudel, making apple strudel takes time and is not exactly something that you can whip up when the craving calls for it. The crescent rolls dough is perfect for this quick version.
Quick Apple Strudel Recipe
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cup grated apples
1/4 cup sugar + 1 tsp
2 tsp cinnamon
1 can refrigerated crescent rolls
2-3 tbsp melted butter
2 tbsp breadcrumbs
Directions:
1. Peel and grate apples. Add 1/4 cup of sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon. Set aside.
2. Dust work surface with flour. Unroll dough and keep it as a rectangle. Seal any tears and holes. With a floured rolling pin, roll out the dough as thin as possible.
3. Spread 2 tbsp of butter over the dough. Sprinkle breadcrumbs, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp sugar over dough.
4. Spoon apple mixture on dough.
5. Roll the dough and seal the edges. Brush the dough with butter.
6. Transfer the dough to an ungreased cookie sheet.
7. Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly and dust strudel with powdered sugar.
Fall and everything that comes with it just makes me happy.
Do you love candles as much as I do? I think they add a magical touch to any occasion. What are your thoughts? Be sure to check out the Glade® Limited Edition Fall Collection Scents here.
