Healthy and fit in college

August was a busy month for us. We had two separate college move in days in two different states. Our family is not new to college. My oldest daughter, Melody, is a first year law student and her sister, Christy, is a sophomore. Over the years my girls have figured out their must have college items and a college routine that works for them. While the girls are in charge of packing clothes, bedding, accessories, household items, etc. for their dorm/college apartment, I usually take care of their health/wellness kit. The girls swear by this kit which includes vitamins, pain reliever and chapsticks.

Fit and healthy in collegeThese essentials are always easy to find at my local Walmart. I can see the Pain & Fever aisle the minute I enter the store. The multi vitamins and chapsticks are right next to it.

So here’s what I usually get for them:

Advil Liqui-Gels:  Great for relieving muscle ache, headache and joint pain.  The girls get occasional headaches and nothing’s faster on tough pain (among OTC pain relievers).

ChapStick Total Hydration: This isn’t your typical chapstick – ChapStick Total Hydration is 100% natural with argan oil, avocado butter and rosehip oils. It instantly smoothes and moisturizes. The girls aren’t big on lipsticks – They use ChapStick Total Hydration throughout the day and even when they go out at night.

Centrum MultiGummies : As much as Melody and Christy try to eat healthy, there are days when pizza and tacos win. Centrum MultiGummies supports their energy, immunity, and metabolism and it’s perfect for those days when they don’t eat as healthy as they should.

Emergen-C:  With over 20 varieties of vitamin supplement drink mixes, Emergen-C offers the formula, flavor, fix, and FUN you’re looking for!

There you have it. These are the must have essentials for my daughters. Not a whole bunch of product – just a few that work for them.

Staying healthy and fit in college is essential for maintaining stress levels and good grades. In the following Q & A, Melody and Christy will share with you how they stay happy, healthy and fit in college.

Q&A with my daughters: College Health and Fitness Tips

Q: What is the most important factor to staying healthy and fit in college?

Christy: Keeping a routine. I find that having a routine is the best way to keep things from spiraling out of control. Eat a healthy breakfast, create a workout schedule that fits with your classes and put aside a few hours each day to study so you don’t find yourself pulling all-nighters before each midterm.healthy and fit in college

Q: With such a busy schedule, how do you find time to fit in your workouts? What types of exercises do you do?

Melody: I am up at dawn. I eat a small breakfast (like eggs, smoothies, oatmeal or yogurt) and then I’m out the door. I always fit in a run and afterwards I do simple things that I can do at home like push-ups, pull-ups, weights. It’s much easier to stick with a workout if it’s simple and convenient.Healthy and fit in college

Q: As a college student you’re always on the go. What are some quick, healthy snacks and meals you would recommend?

Christy: If you have the choice, go with fruits and vegetables. That is always my first choice. I also love cottage cheese with fruit. It’s high in protein and so good. As far as meals, I like to cook a big pot of brown rice and serve it with a veggie stir fry. I am obsessed with rice or couscous and veggies. I eat it for lunch and dinner. I also like grilled chicken and salads. healthy and fit in college

Q: Do you feel that workouts help you do better in school?

Melody: Absolutely. There’s no question that physical fitness helps me feel more energized and focused. It also helps me diffuse stress which definitely helps me clear my head and properly focus on school and life.healthy and fit in college

Q: Do you have any advice for a college freshman who is trying to find the time to work out and eat better?

Christy: Just replace whatever you are currently eating with a more sensible choice. For example, replace soda with water. Small changes can have a big impact on your overall well-being. As far as working out, taking breaks from study and just going for a walk is a great start to keep active.

Q: What are some items you usually take along to keep you going through the day?

Melody: Since I am on campus from 9 a.m. until 7 or 8 p.m., I always bring my lunch and plenty of healthy snacks. A reusable water bottle, Advil Liqui Gels (use as directed) for occasional headaches, and my chapstick are also in my backpack. ALWAYS!fit and healthy in college

Q: In your opinion, what is the one mistake many freshmen make?

Christy: They take on too much. While they might want to go to class, work, play a sport, and participate in clubs and social activities, the reality is that sooner or later they’re going to get run down by doing too much. The focus should be on doing the things you truly love and forget about the rest.Healthy and fit in college

Q: Chicago is known for its harsh winters. What do you do to stay healthy during the cold months?

Melody: I take a multi vitamin every single day. During the cold season, I also drink Emergen-C. Super Orange is my favorite flavor. Washing my hands or using a hand sanitizer throughout the day also helps prevent a large number of illnesses. healthy and fit in college

Q: Any other advice for staying fit, healthy, and happy in college?

Melody: Do everything in moderation and don’t deprive yourself. It’s ok to enjoy an occasional pizza or chocolate. Learn to relax. Take a nap, listen to music or talk to people who are positive. Enjoy simple things in life. Every morning I watch the sun rise over Lake Michigan. This may sound corny but this simple experience makes me incredibly happy and fuels my soul for the day. College is such a fun time. Enjoy!Healthy and fit in college

Christy: Learn to explore. College is here to show you new ideas and concepts. Try new things. Anything is possible as long as you say it is.
